For most visitors Dalwhinnie’s best known attraction is likely to be the distillery, but the village’s setting at the head of Loch Ericht means that those who are prepared to walk a little way will be rewarded by fine views, including of remote Ben Alder and its neighbouring mountains beyond the loch to the southwest.

Details of this and other local walks can be found below.

DALWHINNIE DISTILLERY

Dalwhinnie Distillery, the highest distillery in the country, is a VisitScotland “five star attraction”, home to a Highland Single Malt whisky known across the world for its smooth flavour, including hints of heather, honey, citrus and vanilla.

Visitors can enjoy The Dalwhinnie Tour, which lasts approximately 45 minutes and offers a detailed explanation of the traditional art of malt whisky distilling. At the end of the tour each adult is offered two complimentary drams of whisky with a matching handmade chocolate, a souvenir tasting glass, and a discount voucher which can be redeemed in the distillery shop.
Dalwhinnie was awarded “Best Distillery Tour 2017” by Drinks International, and so the tours are very popular, making it wise to book ahead if you can. Those who have no time for either a tour or tasting are welcome to relax in the visitor centre or to browse in the shop.

LOCAL WALKS

There are a range of scenic walks in and around the village which give visitors the opportunity to see Loch Ericht and the surrounding hills, and with the support of the Cairngorms National Park Authority the Dalwhinnie community has produced the leaflet below giving details of these walks.

FISHING ON LOCH ERICHT

Loch Ericht is popular with anglers, and is home to char, wild brown trout averaging eight ounces (0.2 kg), and ferox trout weighing up to 10 pounds (3.7 kg). Bank fishing and fly fishing are the most common methods of landing fish from the deep waters of the loch, which has an average depth is 199 feet (60.7 metres) and a maximum depth of 512 feet (156 metres).

Day permits are issued by the Badenoch Anglers Association, and can be obtained from the petrol station in the village.
